    PERSONAL INJURY or HUMAN BLOOD/BODY FLUID EXPOSURE

  • If you are seriously injured

  • If you can’t stop the bleeding

  • If you feel unwell because of your injury

*GO DIRECTLY TO THE NEAREST EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT or CALL 911*

Personal injury - No Risk of Contamination

1. Wash the wound

  • Wash the wound or area that was splashed with clean water and soap (do not use soap for eyes) for a minimum of 5 minutes

2. Cover the wound

  • Cover the wound with a clean dry bandage - see RN if needed

3. Tell your instructor

  • Tell your instructor/supervisor that you have sustained an injury that is not contaminated.

4. Report the incident

  • Log in to your CCID
  • Fill in U of A Incident Report form ( click here). **Enter Dentistry as the department
  • Did you miss work or school because of the injury? Did you see a physician for the injury? Fill in WCB form (click here)
  • Print & Sign completed form - Deliver to RN (or your supervisor if you are an employee)

Human Blood/Body Fluid Exposure

If your source patient is known or assessed at high risk to be HIV+ AIDS+ and/or Hepatitis C+

Perform steps 1 - 3 below and take the source patient with you to the nearest ER

1. Wash the wound
  • Wash the wound or area that was splashed with clean water and soap (do not use soap for eyes) for a minimum of 5 minutes

2. Tell your instructor
  • Tell your instructor. They will decide if planned patient treatment will be stopped or will be completed prior to going for blood work.

3. Cover the wound
  • Cover the wound with a clean dry bandage - see RN if needed

4. Both source and recipient must go for blood work
  • Print off  & fill in requisitions for you and patient. (click here for SOURCE requisition & click here for RECIPIENT requisition)

5. Report the incident
  • Log in to your CCID
  • Fill in U of A Incident Report form (click here). **Enter Dentistry as the department
  • Fill in WCB form (here) print and sign - Deliver to the RN at KEC 8D-151
